Tips To getting Pregnant

Learn how one mistake can reduce your odds of getting pregnant by up to 50%

Tip 1       Visit your doctor and get checked out

If you’ve decided to embark upon the mission of getting pregnant and haven’t managed after three months its a good idea to get a full check up from your doctor – this obviously applies to him and her! This will help you check whether everything’s working right and that there are no undetected sexually transmitted diseases that may cause problems.

Tip 2       Put your cigarettes out and lay off the booze and drugs.

Smiking may give you pleasure but its bad nes when trying to get pregnant – both for you and your fetus should you succeed in getting pregnant. Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs can all effect your fertility so it’s no use waiting until you get pregnant.

Tip 3 Have sex three times a week

Although timing intercourse in line with the woman’s ovulation is important – the more sex you have the more likely you are to get your timing right. Ovulation can sometimes prove hard to pinpoint and easy to miss – three times a week is a good target.

Tip 4 Have sex before ovulation rather than after

If three times a week is beyond the call of duty, for whatever reason, then try and time your intercourse to take place a couple of days before ovulation is expected. The sperm will happily live for 2 to 5 days and will still be hanging around when the egg, which could only last a day, goes riding past. Don’t wait for the ovulation to start before having sex or you’ll miss the boat, so to speak.

Tip 5 Use an ‘Ovulation Prediction Kit’

Many couples think that having sex a couple of weeks into tthe woman’s cycle, using the calendar method of prediction, is good enough to secure pregnancy. This however is a fairly hit and miss approach – as many women don’t ovulate on the fourteenth day. An ovulation prediction kit will help you determine when you ovulate more accurately.

Tip 6 Enjoy having sex

Yes, I know most people obviously do – some more than others! The trouble is if you try too hard it stops being fun and becomes a chore. This then adds pressure to both parties and can work against you. Some people believe that having an orgasm can increase your chances of getting pregnant. For women, the pulsating movements of orgasm will help pull the sperm into the uterus and for men a better orgasm may increase the man’s sperm count and the force of ejaculation.

Tip 7 Choose the right sexual position

You can still have fun and enjoy sex, but try to choose  a position that will let the sperm head in the right direction and keep them in the vagina for longer. The missionary position with the woman lying on her back, knees raised is ideal. Put a couple of pillows under your bottom to tilt your pelvis up and don’t run off immediately after the man has ejaculated – give it half an hour at least to let the sperm get on its journey.

Tip 8 Choose a healthy lifestyle

In addition to tip 2, giving up smoking, alcohol and drugs, its a good idea to try and get fit. Carrying too much excess weight can effect your chances of fertility and will make pregnancy itself harder if it occurs. Taking 30 minutes of vigorous exercise at least three times a week is really a bare minimum.

Tip 9  Eat well and sleep well

Another thing that is often overlooked is your diet. Yes, it’s important to take a folic acid supplement whilst trying for a baby but its also important to make sure you’re getting the right vitamins and minerals. Supplements are OK but a good diet rich in fruit and vegetables will make you feel good and increase your fertility.

Tip # 10.  Keep trying until you get there

Many couples get pregnant within a year of trying. This may sound a long time but it takes many couples this long to be successful. If you still don’t get pregnant within a year consult your doctor for further advice.

Good luck.
